Anthony Stanco Group – Jazz Encounters
September 13 @ 8:00 pm$10
Anthony Stanco—jazz trumpeter, arranger, composer, and bandleader—is a bright, rising star in a new generation of jazz musicians.
Born in Southeast Michigan, raised in the Blues and Soul mecca of Detroit, and tutored by the community’s finest (Rodney Whitaker, Marcus Belgrave), Stanco joins a generation of jazz musicians that both reveres the roots of the music and energetically seeks its future. With a big, brilliant sound and a fearless command of the horn, Stanco brings to mind such trumpet greats as Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie.
Stanco’s music covers a wide artistic range—serious to playful, contemplative to joyous, traditional to contemporary—all while remaining grounded deep in the traditions of swing, bebop, and the blues.
As someone who benefited early on from talented and passionate mentors, it’s only natural that Stanco would be drawn to become an educator himself. He has been a guest artist with Denison University, UofD Jesuit, Cheboygan Area High School, and has adjudicated multiple jazz festivals in the mid-west. Stanco has also guest Lectured at Michigan State University, is on faculty at Brevard Jazz Institute, and an adjunct faculty member at Oakland University in Rochester, MI.
In 2015 Stanco joined The Ohio State University School of Music as a Lecturer and Instructor of Jazz Trumpet. Most recently he has taken the role of Director of Jazz Studies at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale.
