Ed Hernandez

Background

Ed Hernandez was born and raised in Washington Heights, a vibrant and culturally diverse neighborhood in New York City. There, he was immersed in a rich musical landscape, discovering and appreciating genres such as pop, rock, funk, soul, jazz, Latin jazz, and salsa.

During his time at Cardinal Hayes High School and later at Fordham University, Ed played trumpet in a Latin and Latin Jazz band, performing at nightclubs, universities, and various venues. He went on to study law at Fordham University Law School before relocating to Miami in 1985, where he practiced law until his retirement in 2024.

Beyond his professional career, Ed remained dedicated to community service. He served as chair of a nonprofit organization that supported the educational needs of underprivileged students across the tri-county area. He also played a key role in establishing a music program that enlisted college students majoring in music to provide lessons to elementary school children.

Since retiring, Ed has embraced a new chapter in life, cherishing time with his family—especially his grandchildren—traveling, and reconnecting with his deep-rooted passion for music. A firm believer that it’s never too late to learn, he has been studying flamenco, Spanish classical, and jazz guitar.

Ed previously co-hosted the Jazz Café alongside Ed Blanco and now hosts his own show, International Jazz Café, on the last Sunday of each month. Recognizing jazz’s universal appeal, his show aims to explore its many subgenres and showcase talented artists from around the world.
