April brings the mesmerizing vocals of Veracruz-born Lucia, the first Latiné artist to claim victory at the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Jazz Competition. In May, experience the soulful and heartfelt melodies of acclaimed singer-songwriter Jarrod Lawson.
The Faena Jazz Series season opens with an historical collaboration between famed saxophonist and composer Paquito D’Rivera and the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. The show will open with the Stamps Wind Quintet performing his popular classical piece “Aires Tropicales,” a five part suite for woodwind quintet highlighting musical styles popular in Cuba since the 18th century such as danzon, habanera, comparasa and son. The second part of the program will feature D’Rivera performing with the Stamps Jazz Quintet in the style of Latin jazz, which has brought him numerous accolades over a decades-long career.
To celebrate the month of romance, guests are invited to enjoy a special evening with Aymée Nuviola and Kemuel Roig. Havana Nocturne is inspired by the Filin movement of 1950’s and ‘60’s Havana, which was in turn inspired by U.S. jazz singers such as Nat ‘King’ Cole and Sarah Vaughan.
A master song interpreter and multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy winner Aymée Nuviola is universally considered to be the greatest of today’s Latin singers. Fellow Cuban pianist Kemuel Roig is an exceptionally talented and original artist who has quickly become recognized as one of the best of his generation. Together they will bring listeners back to the glamorous nightlife of 1950’s Havana, in an evening of nostalgia and romance.
